Hotel Unfound Door
Commercial / 2021
Unfound Door Hotel stands as a testament to the restoration of cultural heritage and the seamless integration of the past into the present. Housed in a 19th-century building with the status of a cultural monument, Unfound Door emerged vision to preserve the historical significance and appearance of the structure while transforming it into a modern hotel. The project was inspired by the historical context of the building, which reflects the European architectural style of 20th-century Tbilisi. The unique decoration painted by the French, which adorns the entrance, was hidden under the green paint of the Soviet period. This color has become a symbol of history, a conceptual cornerstone, which today is featured prominently in the interior, chosen to play a central role. Navigating the complexities of working with a designated monument, the team faced challenges in adhering to strict dimensions imposed by load-bearing walls. The rehabilitation process included a thorough restoration, aiming to preserve all existing authentic details. This involved revealing the paintings on all the walls of the building, preserving and restoring the wooden glass lattices, and various architectural elements. The designer introduced modern materials, such as brass, stainless steel, and mirrors, bringing a fresh direction to the historic structure. The harmonious blend of Baroque style and Brutalist elements further enhances the building's appeal for visitors. Committed to harmonizing past and present, Unfound Door features 14 uniquely designed rooms, one of which is a massage space. Each room tells a different story, with seven depicting the creation of the world, each interior radically different from the others. Each room also includes thematic clues that present a subtle challenge for visitors to discover.
